The BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues, the political forum for water and waste water management, set new standards with the continuation of its series of events on January 19, 2017: Around 200 participants from politics, business, science, research and civil society met in the CityTube Berlin to talk, discuss and inform about “Sustainable Solutions for Water and Food Production”. With this theme in mind, this fifth BLUE PLANET event made an excellent contribution to the 2017 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) (January 19-21, 2017 in Berlin), with its slogan “Agriculture and Water – the key to global nutrition”.The close link between agriculture and water, which is fundamental to food security, is more and more a major challenge for the future for many regions of the world.
Technical solutions, social innovations and strategies for coordination of collective goal-setting in the water and agricultural sectors were identified as the basic prerequisites for sustainability. As important findings from the keynote by Prof. Jan Lundqvist and the lively panel discussion, the following recommendations for action can be stated:
- Development of new technical solutions
- Supporting social innovations as part of sustainable water and agricultural policy
- Promotion of sustainable approaches and strategies in coordinating water management and agricultural goals
