Water is at the heart of global food security. This became clear once again at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) 2026 in Berlin, held under the theme “Water. Harvests. Our Future.”
Within this international context, the BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues provided a framework for joint engagement: German Water Partnership (GWP) and the Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin (KWB) contributed their expertise and perspectives to the global discussion during the session “Science, Practice and Policy – Working Together for Sustainable Water Use in Agriculture” – bringing the BLUE PLANET dialogue beyond its core event into an international policy arena.
Bringing BLUE PLANET to the GFFA
Under the umbrella of BLUE PLANET, GWP and KWB – supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises – helped shape the conversation on water and agriculture by highlighting innovative approaches to water management and resilience. Their joint contribution connected stakeholders from politics, science, business and civil society, reinforcing the role of Berlin as a hub for international water dialogue.
The discussions made clear: without water, there is no food security. At the same time, increasing pressure on water resources – driven by climate change, population growth and competing sectoral demands – requires integrated and forward-looking solutions.
From Dialogue to Action
The engagement of GWP and KWB at the GFFA reflects a core principle of the BLUE PLANET Berlin Water Dialogues: creating spaces for exchange that go beyond a single event. By actively contributing to international platforms like the GFFA, BLUE PLANET extends its reach and impact, fostering continuous dialogue and collaboration.
Key topics included:
efficient and sustainable water use in agriculture
innovation in irrigation, reuse and storage
cross-sectoral cooperation and governance
international partnerships for scaling solutions
Continuing the Dialogue
The GFFA contribution demonstrates how BLUE PLANET serves as a connecting platform – linking local expertise with global challenges and bringing diverse actors into a shared conversation.
Because addressing the water–food–climate nexus requires exactly this: sustained dialogue, strong partnerships and collective action – under one shared vision.
