Olaf studied Hydrology (’06) and added later a MBA (’10) to his CV. He worked his whole career in the wide field of the secondary raw materials. First as a researcher, then commercially for a waste company. He started in ’11 at AquaMinerals, with a main focus on developing and maintaining pathways for residuals originating from water treatment. In ’16 he became CEO of AquaMinerals.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jekel led the Water Quality Engineering Department at the Institute of Environmental Technology at the Technical University of Berlin from 1988 to 2018. He is also an honorary chairman of the German Water Chemistry Society, where he served as Chairman of the Board between 2004 and 2012. Since 01.06.2023 Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Jekel is the new Interim Managing Director of KWB Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin gGmbH.
Daniela Bemfica is a civil engineer and holds a master’s degree in Water Resources Management, focusing on urban hydrology. She is an expert in urban stormwater management, having worked for over 18 years at the Porto Alegre City Stormwater Department in Brazil, where she coordinated the city Urban Drainage Master Plan and served as Director-General. Daniela is currently the Director of Strategic Programmes and Engagement at the International Water Association Secretariat, coordinating a multidisciplinary and culturally diverse team responsible for IWA’s Digital Water, Water and Sanitation Services, Cities of the Future, and Basins of the Future programmes, as well as for the management of all IWA communities of members (Specialist Groups, Young Water Professionals, Regulators, and Fellows & Distinguished Fellows).
Anna Delgado is an engineer with more than 10 years of experience working in the water sector and international development. She is currently working as a consultant for the World Bank, providing strategic and technical support to the “Water in Circular Economy and Resilience” initiative and supporting World Bank’s water projects implement circular economy principles. She has published several reports, book chapters and papers on sustainable wastewater management and on the water-energy nexus. Anna holds a master’s degree in Technology and Policy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).

Bettina Rechenberg is General Director of Division III „Sustainable Production and Products, Waste Management“ at the Federal Environment Agency. The biologist has been working at UBA since 1992, initially in the areas of water protection, chemical safety and sustainable production, resource conservation and material cycles. Since 2015, she has been head of Division III, which analyses the environmental impacts associated with the extraction of raw materials, industrial production and use, recycling and disposal of products and seeks practicable, environmentally sound and resource-saving solutions. This also includes the protection of water bodies from avoidable pollution.
What excites you the most about being part of the BLUE PLANET advisory board?
I am delighted to contribute to this exciting and successful format, which bridges the gap between science and practice. In the face of climate change, I find it thrilling that we are also addressing water quantity alongside water quality concerns.
What’s your contribution to BLUE PLANET?
UBA is committed to addressing environmental impacts throughout the entire value chain. Our purpose is to find practical solutions, which is why we offer support for research projects and their implementation. The insights gained are integrated into BLUE PLANET.
What can people expect from the next BLUE PLANET?
I find it particularly exciting that the online conference not only deals with the issues of recycling water and its constituents but also with the utilisation of the thermal potential contained in wastewater.
